Behind the railway station, cross the small river Libunka and walk along the red trail. Libunka flows in the Jizera in the south of Turnov. Ascend steeply through Masov past a boarding house to a solitary rock at the edge of the Hruba Skala plateau, which is called Hlavatice. There are metal stairs and a railing on the rock. It offers a beautiful view of the town of Turnov, Jested ridge, Bezdez and Ralsko.
Our path keeps following the red trail through the forest to Valdstejn, which was originally a Gothic castle founded at the end of the 13th century on three sandstone rocks. It was a family castle of the lords of Wallenstein. It became deserted after a fire at the end of the 16th century. The visitor´s attention will be drawn to copies of Baroque sculptures on stone bridges from 1713. The originals are placed inside. At the castle, there is a Baroque chapel of St Jan of Nepomuk from 1722. St. John Baptist in the painting in the first courtyard is believed to carry the resemblance of K. H. Macha. The composer J.B. Foerster used to stay in the inn. The ruins of the original castle are completed with romantic addition and paintings from the 16th century. Vald?tejn is the property of the town of Turnov.
After the sight-seeing tour of the castle return to the marked road fork at the refreshment building and continue along the red trail which is sometimes called the Golden Trail of the Bohemian Paradise. There is an unmarked path from the road fork behind the clearing which leads to the right to the Jiros (Kopic) farm, one of the well-known buildings of folk architecture in the Bohemian Paradise. The building is completed by a beautiful folk sculpture of St George from 1817 and many rock reliefs by the folk artist - self-taught sculpturer Vojtěch Kopic.
Our main trail leads along the red one to the rock viewpoints of the Hruba Skala Rock Town (Skalak). To the left, there is a view of Certova ruka - Devil's Hand, where there used to be a primaeval settlement, further the viewpoint U Lvicka - At Lion's and the viewpoint Na Kapelu - Of Orchestra with dominating Kapelnik - Conductor.
Then pass the Bukovina arboretum which was founded in 1860-62. Its area is 2.73 ha and its base is formed by 35 kinds of trees mainly from northern America. Behind the arboretum before Hruba Skala the red trail meets the yellow one. You can turn left, following the yellow trail, and reach the Marianska Viewpoint which is considered to be the most beautiful in the Bohemian Paradise.
The yellow trail ends at the Symbolic Cemetery of Climbers. It is also possible to descend directly to the Adam's Bed from the road fork of the red and yellow trails. However, our main trail still leads along the Golden Trail of the Bohemian Paradise, marked in red, to the parking site with refreshment at the Hruba Skala mansion.
The Hruba Skala mansion was built on the rocks in the place of the Skala castle from the middle of the 14th century, which belonged to the Wallensteins. In the 16th century, during the ownership of the Smiricky family, it was rebuilt and turned into a Renaissance mansion with later Baroque alterations. It acquired its romantic appearance by a Neo-gothic reconstruction under the lords of Aehrenthal in the middle of the 19th century. After 1948 it was used as recreation centre. The courtyard and viewpoint tower are open to the public. Notice the pseudo-Gothic Church of St Josef from 1812 in the space in front of the mansion.
Turn right along the green trail at the marked road fork at the parking site to the rock cleft called Mysi dira - Mouse Hole and reach the area of Draci skaly - Dragon Rocks. Pass the St Prokop sculpture from the 2nd half of the 18th century and walk down to the Sedmihorky spa.
The former hydrotherapeutic and climatic spa, founded by the landlord A. Lexa of Aehrenthal and by Lomnice doctor A. Slechta, was open on May 15, 1842. In the seventies it was visited by distinguished people at the head with Jan Neruda, who coined the name Bohemian Paradise. Surrounded by buildings, there is an A. Slechta´s bust by J. V. Myslbek.
You can end your trip in Sedmihorky - reach the railway station and return by train to Turnov. The main trail follows the blue Angrova path which leads past adapted springs (Antonin´s, Josef´s, Korensky´s springs) to the well-known formations of Skalak. Pass below Taktovka - Baton and Kapelnik - Conductor, walk through the passage between Sfinga - Sphinx and the Ant Tower and ascend steeply back to the Hruba Skala plateau where you can visit Jan' s viewpoint. Then you will reach again the red Golden Path of the Bohemian Paradise. Walk along it to the Valdstejn castle. To return to Turnov, we recommend the green trail through the Pelesany village.
The walk can be shortened if you choose the parking site below Valdstejn as the starting point. The best way to the parking site is to walk from Turnov in the direction to Jicin. Right behind the town, turn right at the petrol station in the direction of Pelesany. In Pelesany you have to turn left at the cross-roads with a phone box. Reach the parking site along the red biking trail past the cemetery.
