Zeleznice is a picturesque little town and a spa. It is mentioned for the first time in 1320. It was given its name because of a prehistoric iron ore deposit. The Roman Church of St John the Baptist was reconstructed in the Baroque style in 1727-31 and consecrated to St. Giles. The modern town centre was created after a fire in 1826 as a unique Empire urban whole which was declared a urban conservation zone.

The Municipal Museum (housing collections which depict national history and geography, the war of 1866 and Kavan's paintings) is in an Empire burger house dating from 1827 with furnishing of a former merchant's house and also in the neighbouring timbered cottage near the church. Nowadays the spa houses a sanatorium for children. Zeleznice is the birth place of the writer Stanislav Rudolf.

Our trail leads from the Zeleznice square along the red marked Golden Path of the Bohemian Paradise. First if follows a road, then it goes past a ranch which was made from a former children's campsite and enters a forest. Walk along the red trail up the steep Kyjsky Ridge and descend to the Kyje village. Pass picturesque buildings and walk to the railway station. Then there is another steep ascent to the top of the Tabor hill.

The melaphyre hill Tabor (687 m) was originally called Chlum. The present name is due to the gatherings of people in the Hussite era. In the northern slope, there is an interesting Way of the Cross. Small brick chapels of the Way of the Cross are decorated by cast iron reliefs which were cast by the steel works in Blansko.

Descend from Tabor along a small road marked in red to the Chlum hamlet and walk along the main road to Plouznice. Cross the railway crossing and turn left at the crossroads together with the red marked trail to a secondary road. From this road, there are beautiful views of the Giant Mountains in the surroundings of Jicin.

Walk through Zdar u Kumburku and walk along the road marked in red till you reach a tourist restaurant called Klepanda. From the restaurant, the road turns left to Syrenov which is the birthplace of Frantisek Cyril Kampelik, the promulgator of co-operative trustee savings banks (called "kampelicky").

Lovers of romantic castle ruins can also visit the nearby Kumburk (red and yellow trails). The ruins of the medieval castle Kumburk are found on a high basalt cone. The castle was founded at the beginning of the 14th century when it belonged to the Vartenberg family. In the 16th century it served as a prison. According to a legend, Eliska Smiricka was imprisoned in the cylindrical tower. There is a breathtaking view from the ruins of the prismatic tower.

Our trail continues from Klepanda along the blue trail. First it follows a road and then it goes through the forest to the ruins of the castle Bradlec. The castle Bradlec dates back to the 14th century. It was built by the Markvartic family on a basalt cone (557 m). Under the reign of king Vaclav IV it was the seat of rebellious Vanek of Jenstejn and it was conquered by the royal troops. It was deserted in the 16th century. Today you can see remnants of the gate, the palace and the half-circular tower stonework on the forested hill. The stonework consists partially of worked sandstone ashlars and partially of basalt.

Walk down from the castle along the blue trail to the Ujezdec hamlet where there are preserved timbered cottages. Descend further, following the blue trail alternately along the road and along a forest path. Behind the forest, walk past a poultry farm, pass the crossroads with turning to Lhan and Soberaz and you reach the crossroads with the main road at Tesin where you will find the red trail. While walking you can see in front of you the Valdice Monastery which was turned into a prison in the middle of the last century.

To the right of the monastery, there soars a prominent basalt hill called Zebin. Our trail turns right from the crossroads following the red trail. Pass through Tesin and you reach the turning to the Zelezny hill. On the Zelezny hill, there used to stand a wooden castle in the early Middle Ages Even though the hill is "open" by a quarry it is possible to see remnants of ramparts and the platform where the castle used to stand. Return to the red trail and walk back to Zeleznice.
