The figure of Albrecht of Valdstejn is linked not only to the Thirty Years' War, but also with the beginnings of Baroque art here. After he converted to the Catholic Church, this opened the way to his military successes and a brilliant career. In addition to this, Valdstejn was also a noteworthy economist of his era and from the centre of his Frydlant duchy, Jicin, he created a model for early Baroque architecture. His death on 25 February 1634, ended not merely the career of one of the most significant figures of our history, but for a long time it also ended the further development of Jicin itself, which was convulsed in that era by the events of the Thirty Years' War.
