On the path of the Baroque

Although Cesky raj is extraordinarily rich in architectural monuments of the most varied styles and time periods, the most noted era is the Baroque with costly building enterprises by the nobility and also dozens of churches and chapels built in the period of re-Catholicisation. Also preserved are abundant testaments to urban architecture from the 18th century as well as folk construction. The open landscape and also village greens are embellished with chapels, Calvaries and statues by folk stonemasons.

Valdstejn trail

The figure of Albrecht of Valdstejn is linked not only to the Thirty Years' War, but also with the beginnings of Baroque art here. After he converted to the Catholic Church, this opened the way to his military successes and a brilliant career. In addition to this, Valdstejn was also a noteworthy economist of his era and from the centre of his Frydlant duchy, Jicin, he created a model for early Baroque architecture. His death on 25 February 1634, ended not merely the career of one of the most significant figures of our history, but for a long time it also ended the further development of Jicin itself, which was convulsed in that era by the events of the Thirty Years' War.

Austro-Prussian War

In many places on some maps of Cesky raj, we find marks representing crossed sabres with the year 1866. In this year, the second largest battle of the 19th century was prepared and fought here. In places where today we rave about the beautiful views into the landscape, artillery once stood and people nearby prayed they would survive the day. We find many monuments, mass graves and we read hundreds of names of men for whom Cesky raj was definitely not a welcoming and attractive tourist area, but the site where in the name of the "great idea," they came to meet their maker.
