Nová Ves nad Popelkou

Nová Ves, typical timbered cottage

The village of Nová Ves nad Popelkou has lain in the wide valley of the Popelka stream for perhaps more than 800 years. However, the first written record shows that it existed as far back as in 1369.

When entering the village, visitors are welcomed by picturesque timbered buildings and the soaring tower of the Church of St. Prokop. It is said that its foundations were laid by Slavic settlers around 1097. However, what we see today is the result of a number of alterations and dates from the mid-18th century.

The beauty of these old timbered cottages was beautifully captured by the painter Antonín Chmelík, whose drawings can be seen in the exhibitions of several museums as well as in books and local chronicles.

One pretty sight for passersby is the stone statute of the water sprite by the bridge over the Popelka at the upper end of the village. It is carved from sandstone and his cloak is edged with gold paint.

The village is located in beautiful countryside, which can be admired from the top of Císařova hůrka or from the Na Vrších hill. From there you get some enchanting views of the Giant Mountains, Ještěd, Kozákov and Černá Studnice, looking towards Zvičina and the gradually falling slopes of the Tábor massif to the east. The panorama is completed by the ruins of Kumburk Castle and the protruding tip of Bradlec Castle. Biking trail 4277 runs through the village.
