Paceřice: Famous Personalities

Paceřice is first mentioned in the sources in 1543 and now forms a single municipality with the village of Husa. The village used to be a place of birth and work to important personalities of cultural and artistic life.

Famous personalities

PETR BUŠEK (1824–1894)

An artistic woodcarver who spent 38 years working for Prince Rohan for and did the wood carvings adorning Sychrov chateau that date from when it was reconstructed in the Neo-Gothic style. He worked with his sons Dominik and Konstantin in his workshop in Husa.

DOMINIK (1855–1935) and KONSTANTIN (1861–1938) BUŠEK

In their famous family woodcarvers’ workshop they created over 600 altars, 95 pulpits, 158 Holy Sepulchers, 33 tabernacles, 31 carved and painted Stations of the Cross and 334 statues. Dominik did the woodcarving, while Konstantin was an outstanding painter.

BOHDAN KAMINSKÝ (1859–1959) – birth name Karel Bušek, son of Petr Bušek

A lyrical poet and symbolist. He published 14 collections of poems, such as Motifs from Sychrov, penned several prose works, and translated 17 works by Molière.

OTAKAR BRADÁČ (1874–1924)

A composer, whose work is based around folk motifs and imbued with a patriotic and pan-Slavic spirit. Slovanské melodie [Slavic Melody] and the operatic Obžínky [Harvest Festival] won the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts Award.

OLDŘICH HUJER (1880–1942)

A prominent Czech linguist and Indo-European expert, professor at Charles University. He wrote a number of scholarly works and edited a series of philological journals. He contributed to both Otto's and Masaryk's encyclopaedias.

LUDMILA ŽOFKOVÁ, née Větvičková (1893–1984)

A reform pedagogue and an acclaimed author of many didactic handbooks. She wrote articles for specialised journals and passed on her expertise and experience at lectures. She was an inspiring teacher and director of the municipal and town school in Bakov nad Jizerou.
