Rovensko pod Troskami

The town of Rovensko pod Troskami lies in a picturesque valley between Trosky Castle and Kozákov. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside, with rock towns, valleys, castles and chateaux. Its emblem features a white doe in a blue field and the first written record of the town dates from 1371. In the past it was famous for cutting Czech garnets and precious stones, amongst other things.
Rovensko pod Troskami – the town of bells
The Church of St. Wenceslas stands in the part of the town known as Na Týně, as does the town’s largest landmark – the wooden belfry dating from 1630. It contains three upside-down bells, which are set into motion by a pedal. You can see them being run every Sunday and on public holidays at 12 o‘clock.
The main landmark on Rovensko’s square is the town hall, which houses the municipal office, the museum, the library, the ceremonial hall, a restaurant and a large social hall. The memorial plaques on the building commemorate the death of the parachutists from Operation Antimony and mayor Josef Kouřil, who in January 1943 saved the town from the fates meted out to the towns of Lidice and Ležáky. On the square there is also a group of bronze sculptures entitled Interview by prof. Josef Drahoňovský dating from 1936, as well as a plague column with a statute of the Virgin Mary from 1744. One famous person born in Rovensko is Václav Karel Holan Rovenský (1664–1718), composer of spiritual songs that are still sung to this day.
Just behind the town you can find Borecké skály Rocks with the Čech viewpoint, from where you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views of Trosky Castle.
Rovensko is also a major crossing point for hiking and biking trails (no. 4176 and 4172), as well as having a bike bus stop. Rovensko railway station is located on a line that is very popular with ramblers and has very good train links to Turnov and Jičín. Every summer, nostalgia lovers can enjoy a ride on the steam train, which regularly stops off in the little town.
