Svijany

The area comprising the municipality of Svijany was settled back in Neolithic times, as proven by archaeological finds discovered there. The records of the village date back to 1345, when it belonged to the Cistercian monastery in nearby Mnichovo Hradiště. In the mid-16th century the village was purchased by Jaroslav of Vartenberk, who built a chateau there. Following the Vartenberks the village was owned by Jáchym Ondřej Šlik, who was executed in 1621 together with other Bohemian lords, and his property passed to Albrecht of Wallenstein. In the 19th century the Wallensteins sold the Svijany estate to the princely House of Rohan, who lived at Sychrov. They owned Svijany until 1948, when all their property was confiscated.

Municipality of Svijany

Svijany as a separate municipality was formed in 1929 with the merger of the villages of Svijany and Podolí. Until 1960 it formed part of the Turnov administrative district, and in the same year the entire cadastre was incorporated into the Liberec district. Svijany was autonomous until 1976, when it was merged with the municipality of Příšovice. They became autonomous again in 1990.

Svijany is home to more than 300 inhabitants and has a municipal office, a multi-purpose sports field, a military cemetery from the 1866 war, the Svijanka restaurant, the Koutný bakery, the Apartmány Svijany guest house, Perner Mill, the Svijany family brewery, Svijany Chateau (Information Centre) and the Brewery Restaurant.

For a walk around the village you can take the circuit leading from here past the chateau, the cemetery, to the highway and back along it under the road bridge. Along the way you can admire some beautiful views of the whole of the surrounding area, from Drábské světničky across to Mužský, Kozákov, the Giant Mountains, Ještěd, and as far as Bezděz.

The Greenway Jizera runs through the village, partly following the nature trail.

Moorings for boats and dinghies

There is an anchorage point for boats under the highway bridge, and swimming is permitted there. You can either continue down the river to Mnichovo Hradiště, or make the most of the circular walk to take a look around our village.
