Sychrov

Sychrov Chateau

Sychrov chateau is naturally the most well-known heritage site in the municipality of the same name, but is by far not its only monument. The municipality of Sychrov, one of the larger municipalities in the region, is made up of five local districts, Sedlejovice, Radostín, Vrchovina and Třtí, originally separate municipalities, and Sychrov itself with its chateau and the administrative and farm buildings constructed around it through the ages. Each of these picturesque districts contains its own sights worth seeing and some lovely tourist attractions. The landscape is rolling and rises from the little Mohelka River, which flows through Třtí, Radostín and Sedlejovice, up to the border of the former Sudetenland at Vrchovina. This is an ecologically valuable biotope, which has not been disrupted by intensive farming and combines elements of open meadow landscape, forests, natural river meanders and ecologically important wetlands.

Třtí – column with a statue of the Virgin Mary

The Marian Column in the centre of the village was commissioned at his own expense by farmer Jakub Kapras in 1739.

Sychrov – two-story railway viaduct

This unique two-story stone railway viaduct from 1859 is located near Třtí. It is 32 metres high and spans the broad valley of the Mohelka River. You can walk to the viaduct from the Sychrov railway station.

Vrchovina – cross commemorating a drowned girl

The cross by house no. 15 was built in 1834 and is a memorial to the only daughter of Josef Šulc, who drowned in the sump there. It is probably the work of the renowned stonemason Jan Zeman of Žernov.

Vrchovina – lookout tower

This wooden lookout tower offers visitors an unusual view of Trosky, Bezděz and Ještěd.

Sedlejovice – stone cross

This massive sandstone cross with its lavish stonework is situated in the centre of the village by the former fire station. It was erected in 1816 with funds donated by the local citizens.

Radostín – bell tower, war memorial and historical school

Located close to one another in the centre of Radostín are the historical school building, attended by pupils since 1885, the new bell tower, and a memorial to those killed in the First World War.

Sychrov – stone pyramid in the game reserve

The granite memorial in the chateau game reserve commemorates the visit by Emperor Franz Joseph I to Sychrov in 1866. It stands on the route the emperor took as he departed from Sychrov chateau. It is now part of the A Wander through the Woods with Kamil Rohan nature trail.
